Eleanor Shepherd's book, More Questions Than Answers, is a refreshing breath of fresh air to any Christian who is intimidated by the questions that "may" arise when we seek to lead a non-believer to Christ. The wisdom shared in Ms. Shepherd's book empowers readers to confidently move forward in the great commission. All too often in the Christian faith, believers can be hesitant to engage non-believers in conversations about Christ due to a fear that we believers may not be able to provide answers to ALL of the questions that may arise. Ms. Shepherd acknowledges that not a one of us has all the answers, no matter our education, years in church or level of faith.
The knowledge that a believer can never be educated or "churched" enough to have ALL the answers is liberating! More Questions Than Answers empowers readers to move beyond their fear and embrace the possibility that for some questions there are no answers, this is simply -- acceptable. It is at this juncture that the art of listening that Ms. Shepherd so eloquently describes, is the only way to ensure that the seeker is consoled by the Holy Spirit as He works in and through us.
Who possibly can explain why a loved one passes away suddenly; there are no answers. And, where there are no answers, our best action is to simply be there in support of those left behind with no contrived "Christian" answer. For far too long, having no answer has been a fear of mine; but no more. How can a Christian who has been commissioned to bring non-believers to Christ when they have the Holy Spirit within not have an answer? It's quite simple actually, only God has all the answers! All believers can do to help the hurting, lost and those seeking God is to be honest and show them the love of Christ with an open heart - while not pretending to have the answers to life's most difficult questions.
Colossians 1:24-26: Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church. I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness— the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people. (NKJV)
Our commission is certain and with the valuable information in Ms. Shepherd's book, More Questions Than Answers, we can have the confidence to fill the great commission described by the Apostle Paul. I recommend this book to any believer who has held back from fulfilling the great commission for fear that they did not have ALL the answers. Rest assured that the Holy Spirit will lead you, and all you must do is discern what the Spirit is speaking nd move confidently in love.
